Weight Loss Program

Obesity, is increasing at alarming rates in our society.  More than one-third of adults in the U.S. are obese, and, 29% of NC residents fall into this category.   Though smoking has decreased due to improved public health awareness, overweight and obesity have steadily increased — particularly over the last twenty-five years.

The American Medical Association has recently acknowledged that obesity is the number one preventable cause of death.  On average, obesity shortens life by six to seven years, and someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as is a normal-weight person.  In addition, excess weight increases the risk of deadly diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and others (see below).  Right now the American Cancer Society considers obesity to be the second largest cause of preventable cancer, after cigarette smoking. Within ten years, obesity might exceed smoking as an avoidable cause of cancer.  Of even greater concern is the increase in obesity among children, adolescents, and young adults.

The Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity

Research has shown that as weight increases to reach the levels referred to as "overweight" and "obesity,"* the risks for the following conditions also increases:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Stroke
  • Liver and Gallbladder disease and gallstones
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Gout
  • Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)

*Overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher; obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 or higher.  Click here to calculate your BMI.

Several studies have shown that the major benefit of weight loss is that it improves not merely one risk factor but the entire risk-factor profile.  Health benefits increase as weight loss moves along a scale from modest to substantial, but modest weight loss nonetheless produces clinically significant benefits.  Weight loss of 10% or less can improve the complications most commonly associated with obesity.

Research shows the following health benefits for weight loss:

  • Weight loss may improve survival in those who have an obesity related diseases, especially type 2 diabetes.
  • Blood pressure decreases with with weight loss.
  • People with type 2 diabetes who lost weight had lower blood sugar levels and were able to use less medicine to lower their blood sugar levels.
  • Sustained weight loss prevented new cases of type 2 diabetes in people who were obese.
  • Weight loss makes it easier for you to breathe.
  • People with obstructive sleep apnea who lost as little as 10% of their weight improved their sleep patterns and had less daytime sleepiness.
